Horses are prone to attack from many species of fly, including the midge Cullicoides, which are irritating to the horse and can cause disease such as Sweet Itch. Horses are not only at risk of fly related diseases such as dermatitis, pruritic (itchy) conditions, lumps and skin lesions, they are likely to become stressed and uncomfortable in the summer fly season. Flies can also carry other parasites, which can infect the horse. Horses can also be affected by lice. Lice typically cause itching of the head, neck and flanks, and usually appear in the winter. This can lead to hair loss and self trauma, and if the infestation is severe it can cause anaemia and make the horse susceptible to other disease.

As we approach tapeworm time it is important to remember that although traditionally the time to worm for this parasite have been around October and March it does not really matter when you treat as long as you do so roughly 6 months apart. The reason spring and autumn have been the times to use tapeworm horse wormers is to avoid re-infestation by the mite that infests horses with tapeworm. Modern theory is this mite is around and ingested by horses throughout the year so it does not really matter when the horse is wormed. However a great deal of worming programmes, and a lot of horse owners specify to worm horses for tapeworm in autumn and spring.

How can I tell if my dog has worms?Worms are rarely passed in faeces. Occasionally tapeworm segments which look like grains of rice may be seen or roundworm which is a long white worm can be found in faeces. Eggs are commonly found in stools but are really too small to see.

It is quite rare for worms to be passed through faeces, but occasionally a roundworm can be passed, and these will be seen as quite long worms which some people can mistake for tapeworm however this is incorrect as tapeworm will look like grains of rice. As cats are hunters they may acquire other species of tapeworm which may be in long chains- individual flat segments of which may sometimes be passed

Fleas can cause irritation where they bite and can make your cat or dog itchy. So look for signs of excessive grooming, such as licking or scratching. This can lead to sore, red skin which in turn can in turn lead to bald patches; and if the skin has been broken could result in a skin infection. These bald patches are commonly on the back but can appear around their head and belly too.

A lot of pet owners do not realise the link between fleas and worms but it is actually the flea that is the cause of most common tapeworm in both cats and dogs. While farm and country dogs may have a potential increased risk of exposure to animal carcasses making the need for them to be treated more frequently for tapeworm with either Drontal for dogs or our own Easimax dog wormer no pet can be truly isolated. This means that even cats that are kept indoors can be infected with tapeworm from fleas.

Do I need to worm my horse?Yes a horse wormer schedule is essential, it is possible to reduce the frequency at which one worms ones horse, but only through excellent pasture strategy; worm tests and their correct interpretation However within your programme you always need to worm for encysted small red worm in autumn through to the back end of winter, and of course for tapeworm if you have not done so for six months, it is also wise to worm a new horse entering the yard, and if you do use a FWEC if the results are over 200 epg.

The way the drug industry works is that when drugs are new, the drug company that developed them has a patent, that means that no one else can copy them and sell them. This is fair enough, the company that made them has had to spend loads of money developing the drug, licensing it and marketing it; they need to recoup this back.
